Benedict Cumberbatch’s autograph on my copy of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, from the NYC PBS screening of “A Scandal in Belgravia.”
It was an amazing evening. I was blown away by how kind, down-to-earth, and endearing he was, as well as interesting and thoughtful about his work. The Q&A was a fantastic experience and I was never more grateful to be there than when they announced that about 10,000 people had entered — 10,000 people and @shazari and I were among the winners. It’s just not the kind of thing I ever expected to happen.
As for the autograph line, we were at first handed Post-Its for personalized inscriptions, but they revoked those soon after for time reasons. When I got up there I lost my nerve and all my clever notions of what I’d say and just said what I really felt — that he was an inspiration — and thanked him, and stood there like a deer in headlights while he thanked me and inquired after the spelling of my name and made chit-chat about a friend of his with the same name and @shazari tried to get my attention to take my picture (I’d forgotten about the existence of pictures).
In person he is just as handsome, rather youthful, and very tall. Thank you, Benedict, it was an honor.
